What is an MX record?

An MX (Mail Exchanger) record is a DNS entry that tells the world which servers accept email for a domain. Each record has a hostname and a priority number; lower numbers are tried first.

If a domain has no MX records, it cannot receive normal email, so every address on it will bounce regardless of how the address is spelled.

Why MX records matter for verification

Checking MX is the cheapest, fastest signal in email verification. A missing or misconfigured MX is a definitive bounce, while a healthy MX is the gateway to deeper mailbox checks.

MX presence does not prove an individual mailbox exists. For that you need a full verification that probes the mailbox itself.
